Emotional Intelligence (EQ) has been with us since the mid-1960s. Michael Beldoch (1964) is given the credit for coining the term; while Peter Salavoy and John Mayer (1997) went on to formulate a coherent theoretical framework of Emotional Intelligence and Daniel Goleman (1997) popularized Emotional Intelligence in leadership and the world of work.
No matter how much experienced a trainer gets to be, every training event brings along some degree of anxiety. I for one have not been able to get rid of anxiety before training even with all my years in training and development! I therefore resolved to embrace it as part of the game of training. I took the view that anxiety cannot be eliminated since it is a natural and human response.
While most businesses are now acknowledging the benefits of Training and Development to business performance, the attitude shift is yet to reflect in bigger budgetary allocations to Training and Development. The positive attitude shift towards Training and Development largely comes from business embracing the Triple Bottom-line Value Creation Model.
